Testing of the FZ50

1.  An Investigation into the Variation of Resolution with Aperture of the Panasonic FZ50 Digital Camera and Nikon teleconverters.

A resolution test chart designed by the author (see  below) was used to assess the resolution both monochrome and colour at 35 mm equivalent focal lengths of 35, 135 and 420 mm and at 420 mm with Nikon TC-E15ED and TC-E17ED teleconverters attached both individually and as a stacked pair. The results are presented in graphical form.

It also includes an assessment of the reduction in vignetting achieved by shortening the TC-E15ED. The resulting improvement is illustrated both in comparative images and numerically in the form of plots of brightness versus diagonal position.

For personal use only by private individuals, copies of the Colour Resolution and Stepped Es Test Charts are available here:  Colour Test ChartStepped Es Test Chart.

2. An investigation of the Extra Optical Zoom(EZ) and Digital Zoom(DZ) options of the FZ50 Digital Camera.

The project was aimed primarily at investigating the properties of the highly popular “Extra Optical Zoom”, EZ Zoom feature and its effect on focal length, image size, resolution, focussing and exposure metering but was extended to include an investigation of the effect of downsizing Digital Zoom(DZ) images.

A resolution test chart designed by the author was used to allow comparison of the resolution obtained in the various Normal, EZ, DZ and downsized DZ images. To allow comparison with a more typical subject a picture of a bird made from feathers mounted on a water colour background was used to assess the effect of EZ on focussing and exposure metering and to allow comparison of the resolution and image quality in Normal, EZ, DZ and downsized DZ images.

3. An investigation of the Variation of the Colour Resolution with ISO and Noise Reduction Settings of the FZ50 Digital Camera.

This document describes an investigation into the variation of colour resolution for ISO ratings of 100 to 1600 and Noise Reduction settings of Low, Standard and High. The findings are presented in graphical form and the images from which they have been derived are available via a link to my DPReview gallery.

As a previous investigation indicated that the maximum resolution at 100 ISO was significantly colour dependent the purpose of this investigation was to investigate how the resolution would vary with colour for the full range of ISO values and the extent to which it would be affected by the Noise Reduction setting.

  1. 4.Panasonic FZ50 at High ISO Values - Effect of Saturation and Sharpness Settings, Comparison of Silkypix Pro 5 for Panasonic and RawTherapee V 4.0

This report describes an investigation of the improvements to FZ50 ISO 400 Fine Quality JPEG images which may be obtained via the settings in the Picture Quality menu and by using Silkypix Pro 5 for Panasonic and RawTherapee 4.0 to process 400 ISO RAW images.

  1. 5.The effect on aperture of adding a front mounted teleconverter

An optical an analysis is presented which demonstrates that the use of an afocal teleconverter will not result in either an increase or a decrease in the effective aperture of the camera lens.

The optical analysis can be found here.
