This site presents some information and test results on the Nikon Coolpix P900, Panasonic FZ35/38, ZS3/TZ7, ZS20/TZ30, ZS30/TZ40, ZS40/TZ60, ZS50/TZ70, ZS60/TZ80 and ZS/TZ100 digicams and the Panasonic 700 and 900 series camcorders.  It also includes sections on testing of the Panasonic FZ50 and resolution test charts which have been developed by Dr J. C. Brown.

Nikon Coolpix P900


Added May 2015: The variation of widest available aperture with focal length of the P900

I have added a section with a graph showing the variation of widest available aperture with focal length of the P900.


Added May 2015: Testing of the Resolution of the P900

I have added sections which describe testing of the resolution of the P900 at a range of focal lengths up to 2000mm EFL, as well as comparisons across the range of ISO settings and aperture settings.


Added May 2015: Reducing the Focus Distance of the P900 with a +0.4D Closeup Lens

I have added a section describing the use of a +0.4D achromat on the P900 to reduce the focus distance at the max zoom of 2000mm, with example images.

Added November 2015:  The P900 with the Raynox DCR-250 +8D Macro Lens

I have added a section describing the use of the Raynox DCR-250 macro lens on the P900, with sample images showing the high magnification which is possible with this combination.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40/TZ60



Added April 2014: Testing the resolution of the ZS40

I have added a section with results of resolution tests on the ZS40 at different focal lengths across the range of available apertures and ISO settings, and compared them with similar tests on the Canon SX700-HS.


Added May 2014: Features of the ZS40

I have added a section discussing some features of the ZS40, including: the widest available apertures with focal length; notes about the EVF, lens ring and menu system; and a note about folder/file renumbering.


Added May 2014: Close macro and telemacro with the ZS40

I have added a section with results of testing the ZS40 for close AF macro and telemacro which showed that while close macro is similar to the ZS20 and ZS30, telemacro is rather different.


Added May 2014: Update on testing the resolution of the ZS40

I have added the results of further tests of resolution at 50mm and 250mm FLs (equiv.) on the ZS40 which showed that there is no distortion at 50mm FL.

I have added a section about taking closeups with the FZ35/38, including the use of achromats; extending the working distance using a teleconverter; and taking closeup shots of oil and water droplets.


Added March 2011: Changes in FZ35/38 Resolution with ISO setting

I have added a section reporting tests I conducted to examine the changes in resolution of the FZ35/38 with ISO setting and some tests on changes in JPG compression using different shooting modes.


Added January 2014: Filters for Sun and Moon

I have added a section showing the use of a fliter prepared from Baader solar film for images of sunspots; and the use of a yellow-green filter (Hoya X0) to improve the imaging of sunspots and the moon.

Resolution Test Charts


This section has been kindly contributed by Dr J. C. Brown, who has developed an innovative series of resolution test charts for camera testing.  Dr Brown has generously made his charts freely available so that people can assess the resolution of any camera or camera/lens combination themselves.

The design of novel resolution test charts is described, together with guidance on their use.

The four R,G,B,K,C,M,Y stepped lines charts have been replaced with improved versions.

Report describing a Novel Resolution Test Chart:

The report gives a description of the development and application of a novel test chart which has been designed to provide a simple reliable visual method for measuring the monochrome and colour resolution of cameras and camera/lens combinations with acceptable accuracy and consistency.

Tests using the charts described above have been carried out by DPR forum member Jerry045 on his cameras under the guidance of Dr J. C. Brown.
