The P900 with the Raynox DCR-250 +8D Macro Lens


The Raynox DCR-250 is a high quality 3-element macro lens with a dioptre power of 8 (focal length 125mm).  It is a small and lightweight lens which clips onto the front of the P900 lens in the same way as does the P900’s lens cap.


The magnification of a camera with an attached closeup lens is greater the longer the camera lens FL and the higher the dioptre power of the closeup lens (that is, the shorter its FL).  Thus, the combination of the P900’s max FL of 2000mm EFL with the +8D Raynox lens gives a very high magnification, similar to a low power microscope.  The working distance (the distance from the camera lens to the subject) is about 12cm.



Using a tripod I tested my P900 at max zoom (2000mm EFL) with the Raynox lens attached on a number of different subjects as described below.



LCD display on an Apple iMac


Below is a full-sized image of the number “10” as displayed in black on a white backgound on my current iMac screen.  The field width is about 2mm (2000µm).  I have pasted a small image overlay in the centre of the image which shows how the number 10 appears on the screen.  (Click on the image for the full sized view.)

Below is a single green pixel cropped from the above image.  The pixel is about 67µm wide (0.067mm).

Postage Stamp


I previously used my P900 at 2000mm EFL with the Tokina 0.4D lens at a distance of 1.6m to take a shot of a 37 x 26mm postage stamp, as described in this section here, and copied below.  (Click on the image for the full sized view.)

Using my P900 at 2000mm EFL with the Raynox lens, at a distance of 12cm, I took a shot of a 2mm wide area of the same stamp in the region of the kangaroo’s head, as shown below.  (Click on the image for the full sized view.)

The individual small spots of coloured inks can be clearly seen.  The small red spots near the centre are about 30µm (0.030mm) wide on the stamp.

500 Mesh Stainless Steel Gauze


Below is an image of an area of a piece of #500 SS gauze.  The apertures between the wires are about 35µm (0.035mm) wide and the wires are about 26µm (0.026mm) wide.  (Click on the image for the full sized view.)

A Feather

The area covered is about 2mm wide and the distance between the barbs (the green spines) is about 220µm (0.22mm).  The distance between the barbules (the structures along the barbs) is about 28µm (0.028mm).
