TZ100 ISO Series Tests

 



Testing of the ZS100/TZ100 at Different ISO settings


Using the same chart board and lighting as for the aperture series tests, I took JPG-RAW pairs in A mode in JPG-RAW pairs using a tripod and the 2 second timer across the ISO range of 125 to 12800 ISO.  The full sized JPG and RAW files can be downloaded from the links below:

Results

Below are camparisons of enlarged crops from the OOC JPG images in the above series (click on the image for the full sized view):

As can be seen, there is very little visible noise in the enlarged crops from 125 ISO up to 800 ISO.  At 1600 ISO there is an increase in noise accompanied by a slight loss of detail and colour rendition.  This trend continues at 3200 ISO and above, and there is a marked loss of detail and colour at 12800 ISO, even though the noise in broad uniform areas at 12800 ISO appears less than at 6400 ISO.


These results can be compared with those for the ZS60/TZ80 which were carried out under the same conditions and lighting, using the same chart board, as shown here.  It appears that the ZS100/TZ100 has an advantage of about 2 stops in terms of better IQ/lower noise from that comparison.


Conclusion

For the ZS100/TZ100, the range of ISO settings from 125 ISO up to and including 800 ISO appears to give the best IQ with very little noise, while 1600 ISO and even 3200 ISO may be suitable in some situations.
