ZS40 Resolution - Update

Further Testing of the Resolution of the ZS40

I conducted some further tests to extend the examination of the resolution and IQ at different focal lengths on the ZS40.  I had previously examined full WA (24mm equiv.), 145mm, 500mm and max tele (720mm equiv.) as shown on the previous pages.  I used the same setup as previously and tested at 50mm (equiv.) and 250mm (equiv.) focal lengths.

Tests at 50mm (equiv.) Focal Length

Below is the OOC JPG taken at widest aperture (f/4.1) at 50mm FL. (Click on the image for the full sized view):

Assessment

As can be seen from the image above, there is virtually no distortion in the JPG from the uncorrected RAW file.  Also, when the OOC JPG is examined at 100% it can be seen that there is better resolution at 50mm FL in the corners of the image than at 24mm FL.

It can be concluded that the corner distortion that is evident at full WA (24mm) is absent at 50mm FL (equiv.).  It also happens, as described (here) in the section about close AF macro with the ZS40, that 50mm is the FL which gives the best close focus macro magnification on the ZS40.

Tests at 250mm (equiv.) Focal Length

Assessment

The resolution and IQ of the JPG at 250mm FL essentially follows the trend observed with the tests at 145mm FL and 720mm FL.  There is virtually no distortion, and the resolution in the corners is good (about 2200 LPH).  That is slightly less than the resolution at the image centre (about 2300 LPH) as is to be expected.
