ZS40 on a Trip

The Performance of the ZS40 on a Trip to Italy

I took my ZS40 as my main camera on a trip to Italy in June 2014.  The ZS40 has several improvements over earlier models including an extended zoom range (24mm to 720mm equiv.), an improved OIS, faster response times, a lens control ring, and most importantly (and for the first time in a ZS model) it is equipped with an EVF.

I found that the EVF, although relatively small compared with larger camera models, is perfectly adequate and allows framing and viewing in very bright lighting conditions where it can be difficult to use the LCD.

Another advantage of using the EVF is that it acts as an extra aid in holding the camera steady when held against the face, in contrast to using the LCD at arm’s length.

I took many thouands of still images on my trip as well as some video clips.  I used the 16:9 aspect ratio throughout as I planned to make HD videos.  I processed the stills and video clips using iMovie on an iMac, as described previously here.  I exported the movies as 1080/60p MP4 using H.264 compression at 28Mbps.  I burnt the movies to a Blu-Ray disk using Toast, and/or uploaded the movies to Vimeo.

I was pleased with the results and I concluded that the ZS40 performed very well.  It is an excellent travel camera as well as being a very competent “all round” stills and HD video camera.
